It’s probably obvious to say that a book about the lives of anti-Nazi activists in 1930s Germany is always going to be bleak, knowing how the story is going to end.
It’s a fictionalised account of what happened to real people; these tragic, passionate writers and intellectuals. I was surprised at my despair over their conviction in the power of words and truth and reason to fight the bad guys, and fight apathy.
